The Thakhek Loop is a 400-kilometre circuit through the limestone karst of Khammouane Province. Departing from Thakhek, the route passes through Phou Hin Boun National Protected Area, the Kong Lor Cave system, the Nakai Plateau, and returns via Cave Alley, one of the most concentrated collections of caves in Southeast Asia. The loop can be completed in 2 days or extended to 3 days for a more complete experience.

Kong Lor Cave is the centrepiece of the Thakhek Loop. Carved by the Nam Hin Bun River through a 7.5-kilometre underground passage, the cave is navigated entirely by longtail boat. Formations of white limestone rise from the darkness above the river. It is widely regarded as one of the most extraordinary natural attractions in Laos.
