Khammouane Province, Laos
1 Day · 7.5km Underground River Cave

Your private AC minivan picks you up at your hotel in Thakhek at 8:00 AM for the drive west into Phou Hin Boun National Protected Area.

One of the great natural wonders of Laos. Cross the full 7.5-kilometre cave by longtail boat, step out to explore the illuminated formations on foot inside the chambers, then emerge into the beautiful Natane Valley on the far side. Rice fields, quiet villages, and limestone scenery before the boat brings you back through the dark.

A clifftop viewpoint at the edge of Phou Hin Boun National Protected Area, nicknamed the Peak of the Loop. Zip lines, a via ferrata, and a spider-net bridge are on offer. Watch for the endangered Laotian langurs that roam the karst below.

Round trip: your driver returns you to your hotel in Thakhek, arriving late afternoon. One-way: drop-off at Kong Lor village, where you can continue independently to Ban Na Hin or join the Thakhek Loop.

Kong Lor Cave, known in Lao as Tham Kong Lo, is a 7.5-kilometre limestone cave carved by the Hinboun River in the heart of Phou Hin Boun National Protected Area. Visitors travel the full length of the cave by longtail boat, passing through enormous underground chambers where the ceiling disappears into darkness above the river. The experience is unlike any other cave visit in Laos.
The one-day tour from Thakhek departs at 8:00 AM and includes a stop at the Rock Viewpoint at Phou Pha Marn, which overlooks the limestone forest of the national park with views stretching to the horizon. The round-trip option returns you to Thakhek the same evening. The one-way option drops you at Kong Lor village, where you can continue to Ban Na Hin or loop back independently.
Kong Lor Cave is also the centrepiece of the Thakhek Loop. If you want to combine the cave with additional sites over 2 or 3 days, see our full Thakhek Loop tour.
