Cave Alley is a stretch of road south of Thakhek where caves appear one after another in the limestone cliffs on Route 12. The most famous is Tham Pa Fa (Buddha Cave), discovered in 2004 and containing bronze Buddha statues believed to be several centuries old.

1. Depart Thakhek, 8:00 AM
2. Tham Pa Fa (Buddha Cave) — 229 bronze statues discovered April 2004
3. Tham Xang (Elephant Cave) — Buddhist shrine, elephant-shaped stalagmite
4. Tha Falang — river swimming hole on the Nam Don River
5. Tham Xieng Liab — 200m cave along a 300m limestone cliff, soft-shelled turtles
6. Tham Nang Aen — underground lake, paddle-boat ride
7. Return to Thakhek, approx 5:00 PM

## Key facts

- Tham Pa Fa (Buddha Cave): discovered by villager Boun Nong in April 2004; statues 15cm to over 1m tall, thought to be 400-500 years old; photography forbidden inside; cover shoulders and knees
- Tha Falang: means "Foreigner's Landing," a former French colonial swimming spot
- Best season: dry season (November-April) for swimming; some caves have more water inside during wet season
